Hiking – St. Nicolas Shishevski, Canyon Matka

Short tour description: This tour will include hiking up to the church of St. Nicholas Shishevski (Sveti Nikola Shishevski), an enjoyable scenic journey by boat to the Monastery of St. Andrea where traditional lunch will be served. The St. Nicholas Shishovski Monastery is situated on top of the cliff above Lake Matka, thus giving the visitor a spectacular view of the lake and its surroundings. As with most beautiful locations in Macedonia there is a monastery church, St. Andrea. The Monastery St. Andrea was built 1389 and contains frescos of great artistic value.

Detailed schedule for the tour 9:00 - 9:45 Skopje - v. Matka 09:45 - 10:15 There is about 30 min. hiking up to the Church of St. Nicholas Shishevski. There is around 15 min (until 10:30) of time for a visit and a short walk around the church. After that we’ll go further uphill (15 minutes) to a location situated above the church of St. Nicholas Shishevski which affords an excellent view of the whole canyon, so don't forget your cameras. We’ll have around 15 minutes to admire the nature and the beauty of the canyon. 11:30 From the church of St. Nicholas Shishevski we’ll reach a small port where we’ll have to call a boat (by ringing a bell) to come from the other side of the lake (the boat ride is10 from the port to the Monastery St.Andrea). 11:45 Arrival to the Monastery St. Andrea. We’ll have 30 minutes time to walk around the monastery as well as to have a short rest before we continue to the next point. 12:15 - 13:00 Easy walk to the region called Severno sedlo (the Nothern Saddle), another place from where you can admire and enjoy the beautiful nature of the Matka canyon to. There is around 15 min (until 13:15) of time for a view of the whole canyon and taking pictures. After that we’ll go back down to St. Andrew’s Monastery. 14:00 From the small port we’ll take a boat. The trip with the boat is a wonderful experience and the Matka Canyon can be observed from this trip. One way of the boat trip takes about 25 min. Lunch in the lagoon restaurant IMETO and enjoying the traditionally prepared lunch and beautiful untouched nature. There we’ll stay for about 2 hrs. (Depending of the group mood it can be extended) after which we’ll take a boat again and get back to the little St. Andrew’s port. 16:20 - 16:45 Returning to the small port. 16:45 - 17:00 We’ll return to the parking by foot, and after that to Skopje. 17:45 Arrival in Skopje.

Tour Staff & Support: Tour Leader plus driver(s), boat crew and some local guides. Meals: Lunch.
