Village Brajcino, Pelister National park

The village of Brajcino is situated 6 km from Lake Prespa in a valley on the edge of Pelister National Park. It's a perfect location for combining outdoor activities on the mountain with the leisure of the lake. The village has maintained its traditional character and an intimate link with its surroundings. Brajcino is a mountain village (at an altitude of about 1000 m. above sea level) disturbed only by the roaring sound of the local river and by the evening winds rustling through the trees. Occasionally you may hear a dog barking, a cock crowing, or a cow-bell ringing.

The village has around 150 inhabitants and 100 houses and its area around 60 Esq. Cattle breeding was a main activity in the past, but has been replaced by agriculture, especially fruit growing. Many families from Brajcino, emigrated to Canada, U.S.A., Australia, and the Scandinavian countries in the middle of the 20 th century. Today, over 100 families from Brajcino live in Canada. The village attractions and services have been developed by the eco-tourism project together with the inhabitants of Brajcino. Direct contact with the local people and their hospitality makes a stay in Brajcino a unique experience.

The people of Brajcino still produce a variety of food for themselves or for market: garden vegetables; meat and dairy products from their livestock; honey; apples from their orchards; mushrooms, herbs, and berries from the forest; and fish from the river and from Prespa Lake.

Some of the villagers have opened their homes to tourists who can enjoy a meal prepared from mostly local produce in a rural village atmosphere. The local women's group has created different menus for visitors: one “light” menu, one called "the classic menu", and a kind of "Sunday menu" for special occasions.

The classic menu consists of four courses. You will always be welcomed with homemade rakija (local brandy, much stronger than normal liquor), and salads. There is a menu on the table, but the host will also introduce the dishes. Soup, pie, or peppers with fresh yoghurt (or all of them) are served as an appetizer. Turli-tava (baked vegetables and meat), musaka, or tavshe-gravche with meat follows as the entree. A dessert, local cake or baklava and Turkish coffee or herbal tea (from herbs collected on the mountain) follow.

In season, local wine and juice are offered. At the end of the meal you get seasonal fruit as a farewell. In each home you will enjoy the unique atmosphere of the host family and a characteristic cuisine - but always according to the quality standard developed by the women's group. The Brajcino women also cater for smaller groups in a traditional house or for bigger groups in a monastery situated in a beautiful nature setting just 10 minutes outside the village.

The Mountain Nature Trail is the main natural attraction, leading from the village of Brajcino to Golemo Ezero (glacial "big lake"). The trail links the Prespa Lake region with the Pelister National Park and provides breathtaking views, magnificent landscapes, and rare species. It features seven illustrated information stations at different altitude zones, from 1000 meters above sea level in Brajcino to 2400 meters near Golemo Ezero. Hiking time is approximately 5-7 hours and mountain guides are a must for hikers not familiar with the region. They will also enhance your experience in the mountains with their knowledge of local wildlife, which includes bears, wolves, boars, etc..

Ohrid Did you know? Stobi
Macedonian Cities Did you know? Archeological Cites
Ohrid, immortal Ohrid – a kingdom of light and water, a repository of ancient ruins from Macedonia’s earlier kingdoms – is the sublime lakeside town that for many represents the culmination of the Macedonian experience.
All fruits and vegetables are grown organically in Macedonia; tomatoes and peppers are legendary.
The ancient city of Stobi, lying in a fertile valley just a few minutes off the central north-south highway that connects Macedonia with Greece, was a vital trade route in its day. This crossroad of ancient civilizations has left a rich legacy of antique ...
